HIV fight needs more funds: groups

Some local doctors and advocacy groups are saying the recent $2.5 million in provincial funding for the Saskatchewan HIV strategy is a start, but not nearly enough.

"The province is on the verge of a huge forest fire," said Canadian Treatment Action Council spokesperson Mark Randall. "We need water to fight it, but all the province has given us is a thimble-full to put it out."

SASKATOON — Prince Albert is going to be the new site for a satellite office of AIDS Saskatoon, an AIDS service organization serving central and northern Saskatchewan.

“AIDS Saskatoon has just received money from the Public Health Agency of Canada to develop a satellite office in Prince Albert,” said Nicole White, executive co-ordinator of AIDS Saskatoon.

World AIDS Day

Ms. Junor: — Mr. Speaker, the first international AIDS [acquired immune deficiency syndrome] Day was on December 1st, 1988. Twenty-one years later, 33.4 million people are living with HIV [human immunodeficiency virus], including 2.1 million children. Half the people who become infected do so before they are 25, and are killed by AIDS before they are 35. The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is universal access to HIV and AIDS treatment, prevention, and care, recognizing these as fundamental human rights.
